During a tour of Morocco, an Anglo-Swiss couple fell in love with Marrakech. Living in London, and looking for a sunnier clime, they fell for the house that was later to become Dar Les Cigognes (Dar is Arab for house, and Cigognes is French for storks), named for the storks that perch on the ramparts of the Royal Palace opposite. With the assistance of renowned architect Charles Boccara (other work includes the magnificent Marrakech Opera), the owners brought the enchantment of the house back to life. Some of the walls of the building date back to the 1600’s. Over the centuries, the decorative features changed, but the structure remained. A team of nearly 50 craftsmen and artists laboured to bring the house back to its original glory. In 2004, a second house, connected to the first by a covered bridge, was opened. Dar Les Cigognes is a small jewel, showing the many facets of the rich cultural and artistic traditions of Moorish art and architecture. The Dar is conveniently situated across the street from the Royal Palace and the Badi Palace. The owners and staff have a personal commitment to providing guests with comfort and a high level of personalised service, available at all hours. Guests are assisted in selecting and booking restaurants, guides, excursions, and leisure and sport activities in and around Marrakech, as well as farther afield. The professionally trained chef also serves local Moroccan delicacies in the house’s own dining room. Breakfast and afternoon tea are complimentary.
Dar Les Cigognes has been created from two traditional riads, houses built around a courtyard with citrus trees and fountain. On the ground floor of the front riad are the public spaces, including kitchen, dining room, library, living room, reception and office, a washroom and wc, staff quarters and two large alcoves where guests like to take tea. There are four citrus trees, and a tiled basin with a marble fountain in the centre of the courtyard. The dining room, library, and living room all have magnificent fireplaces. Upstairs there are five guest rooms, one of which is a suite. Each has its own well-appointed en-suite bathroom, with bath and shower facilities. The rooms are unique, each drawing on a different aspect of Moorish artistic tradition. A door in the staircase leads into a covered bridge, which connects the two riads whilst housing a shop with fine local handicrafts. The second riad has three guest rooms on the ground floor as well as a hammam, which is reserved for the hotel clients only, as well as a small kitchen. The building is also built around a central court, with a tiled and marble fountain, as well as three magnificent palm trees that reach the upper parts. Upstairs there are three more guest rooms and a bhou (a sitting area) and an additional Moroccan salon.
